Using Google Gemini

Move beyond exploration and learn how to use Gemini in your work. This hands-on workshop develops the prompting discipline and workflow skills needed to make Gemini a reliable tool for writing, analysis, and research.

Effective use of Gemini depends on more than entering a question and reviewing the response. The model you choose, the instructions you provide, and the way you verify the result all influence the quality and usefulness of the work it produces.

This workshop introduces a practical method for using Gemini with greater confidence and control. Participants will learn how to navigate Gemini’s interface and model options, write prompts that produce more dependable results, and apply research and verification practices that make AI-assisted work easier to evaluate and defend.

Designed for both newcomers and those who want to strengthen their existing skills, the session moves beyond casual experimentation and focuses on applying Gemini deliberately to real professional and personal tasks

This workshop is the entry point to the Gemini track and is followed by Everyday Work with Gemini and Building Reliable Gems & Repeatable Workflows.

Participants will learn to:

  • Choose the right Gemini model for the task rather than defaulting to the most capable option
  • Understand which Gemini models and features are available through a personal Google account or an organization-managed Google Workspace account, and how that affects what you can do
  • Decide what information is appropriate to enter into Gemini based on the type of account being used and the organization’s data policies
  • Write clear, structured prompts that produce useful, reviewable results more quickly
  • Identify why a response missed the mark and adjust the specific part of the prompt, context, or model choice responsible
  • Match the depth of research to the question and verify the sources, claims, and conclusions Gemini provides

Topic Outline

One Session In Three Parts

Three hours · hands-on throughout

Part 01Orientation

Getting Started with Gemini

  • Navigate Gemini’s interface and the related tools available around it
  • Choose an appropriate model based on the task’s complexity, speed requirements, and need for deeper reasoning
  • Identify which Gemini models and features are available through your Google account
  • Understand the roles of the Gemini app, Gemini in Google Workspace, and NotebookLM
  • Determine what information is appropriate to enter based on your account type and your organization’s data policies
  • Match a task to the right Gemini tool, model, and level of reasoning before beginning
Part 02Prompting

Prompting Essentials

  • Build effective prompts using a clear task, relevant context, desired format, and practical constraints
  • Use examples to show Gemini what a successful response should look like
  • Refine and redirect a response deliberately instead of restarting after every weak result
  • Know when to continue a conversation, branch it, or start fresh before accumulated context begins to interfere
  • Diagnose why a response missed the mark and adjust the specific instruction, context, example, or constraint responsible
  • Practice writing and improving prompts for real tasks from your own work, with guided feedback
Part 03Research

Research and Discovery

  • Use web search grounding and evaluate cited answers critically
  • Understand when Deep Research is useful, how to guide it, and where its results may fall short
  • Choose between a standard web search and Deep Research based on the complexity and scope of the question
  • Use Audio Overviews to turn research findings into a spoken summary for listening, review, or briefing others
  • Recognize common failure patterns, including fabricated claims, missing information, and outdated material presented as current
  • Determine how much source checking and verification each research task requires
