Prompting & Grounding Microsoft Copilot

General prompting skill transfers to Copilot, but it does not finish the job. Copilot's answers depend heavily on the content you ground it in, the files you attach, the sites and threads you reference, the scope you define, and the sources you exclude. In many cases, improving the reference material will strengthen the result more than repeatedly rewriting the prompt. This workshop focuses on that critical layer and helps participants recognize when a standard prompt is no longer the right solution.

We recommend this workshop for participants who already use Copilot regularly and are beginning to reach the limits of ad hoc prompting. The session briefly revisits the prompting method introduced in Microsoft Copilot Fundamentals, then extends it to Microsoft’s grounding, reference, and prompt-sharing capabilities.

A licensed Microsoft 365 Copilot account is recommended. Before attending, confirm with your administrator that saved prompts and prompt sharing are enabled in your organization’s Microsoft 365 environment.

This workshop builds on Microsoft Copilot Fundamentals and prepares participants for their First Copilot Agent.

Participants will learn to:

• Attach files, meetings, people, and threads as deliberate references rather than relying on Copilot to find the right context
• Narrow Copilot’s scope to a specific site, folder, or document set when tenant-wide search returns too much or too little
• Determine when a task is best served by work grounding, web grounding, or explicitly referenced content
• Create, name, save, and share reusable prompts, and organize approved prompts into a practical team library
• Break complex requests into manageable steps that Copilot can complete without losing focus or drifting from the task
• Choose the appropriate next step when prompting is no longer enough, including Pages, Researcher, Analyst, a custom agent, or Copilot Studio
