Using ChatGPT

Choose the right model and tool for the task, write prompts that produce reviewable results, and conduct research you can verify.

ChatGPT is easy to begin using, but that ease can hide the difference between a plausible response and work you can actually rely on. The model and tool you choose, the instructions and context you provide, and the way you review the result all influence the quality of what comes back.

This workshop introduces a practical method for using ChatGPT with greater confidence and control. Participants will learn how to navigate its core features, choose an appropriate level of reasoning for the task, write prompts that produce useful and reviewable results, and use search and deep research without treating citations as proof by themselves.

Designed for both newcomers and those who want to strengthen their existing skills, the session moves beyond one-off questions and focuses on using ChatGPT deliberately for writing, analysis, problem-solving, and research.

Participants will need an active ChatGPT account. A paid plan is recommended so participants can follow the file and research exercises. Available models, tools, and usage limits may vary by plan and workspace configuration.

This is the entry point to the ChatGPT series. It is followed by Everyday Work with ChatGPT and Building Reliable Custom GPTs & Repeatable Workflows.

Participants will learn to:

  • Choose an appropriate model, reasoning level, and tool based on what the task requires
  • Identify which ChatGPT models and features are available through their personal account or organization-managed workspace
  • Determine what information is appropriate to enter based on the account being used and the organization's data policies
  • Write clear, structured prompts that produce useful and reviewable results
  • Identify why a response missed the mark and adjust the instruction, context, example, or constraint responsible
  • Choose between standard chat, web search, and deep research, then verify the sources and claims ChatGPT provides

Topic Outline

One Session In Three Parts

Three hours · hands-on throughout

Part 01Orientation

Getting Started with ChatGPT

  • Navigate ChatGPT's interface and identify the models and tools available through your account
  • Choose between faster responses and deeper reasoning based on the complexity of the task
  • Understand the roles of standard chat, web search, deep research, file analysis, and Projects
  • Distinguish between a personal ChatGPT account and an organization-managed workspace
  • Determine what information is appropriate to enter based on the account and data policies involved
  • Match a task to the right model and tool before beginning
Part 02Prompting

Prompting Essentials

  • Build effective prompts using a clear task, relevant context, desired format, and practical constraints
  • Use examples to show ChatGPT what a successful response should look like
  • Refine and redirect a response deliberately instead of restarting after every weak result
  • Know when to continue a conversation, branch the work, or begin a new chat
  • Diagnose why a response missed the mark and adjust the specific variable responsible
  • Practice writing and improving prompts for real tasks from your own work, with guided feedback
Part 03Research

Search, Deep Research, and Verification

  • Use web search for current information and evaluate cited answers critically
  • Understand when deep research is appropriate, how to guide its research plan, and where its conclusions may fall short
  • Choose between a quick search and deeper investigation based on the complexity and importance of the question
  • Direct research toward selected websites, uploaded files, or other available sources
  • Recognize common failure patterns, including unsupported claims, missing evidence, and outdated information presented as current
  • Determine how much source checking and verification each research task requires
